Rishabh Pant is now the priciest player ever in the history of the Indian Premier League

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Rishabh Pant made a landmark achievement by becoming the priciest player in Indian Premier League history, with the wicketkeeper-batsman being acquired for $3.2 million by the Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday.

Pant’s acquisition broke the previous record set by Shreyas Iyer, who was purchased by Punjab Kings for $3.18 million during the opening day of the IPL’s massive auction. This event, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the first time, brought some unexpected outcomes.

Both Pant and Iyer are expected to take charge as captains of their respective teams in the world’s wealthiest domestic Twenty20 competition, which is set to begin on March 14 next year, with the final scheduled for May 25.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals are likely to appoint former Lucknow captain Lokesh Rahul as their new skipper after securing him for $1.67 million. One of the biggest surprises of the auction was the intense competition for all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, who was ultimately bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for $2.83 million following a fierce bidding war with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Gujarat Titans made a significant move by acquiring Jos Buttler for $1.88 million, surpassing Rajasthan Royals, who failed to re-sign the England captain. Buttler is expected to open the batting alongside Shubman Gill. Additionally, Gujarat bolstered their bowling attack by signing South African pacer Kagiso Rabada for $1.28 million.

On the other hand, Mitchell Starc’s price saw a noticeable dip, with Delhi purchasing the Australian fast bowler for $1.40 million, a stark contrast to the $2.98 million Kolkata paid for him last year.

Interestingly, Australian batsman David Warner and England’s Jonny Bairstow went unsold on the first day of the auction, as none of the 10 IPL franchises showed interest in acquiring them.

In a sentimental move, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will make a return to Chennai Super Kings for the first time since 2015. The 37-year-old was sold for $1.16 million, marking the highest price he has ever fetched in an IPL auction.
