Extraordinary Buildings Inspired by Exotic Influences
Exoticism, also known as exotica, is a style that gained prominence in the late 19th century and has continued to influence art, architecture, music, and fashion into the 20th century and beyond. Derived from the Greek word exo, meaning "outside," it refers to the allure of the unfamiliar. This aesthetic often draws from Middle Eastern or Asian influences—referred to as Orientalism—or features like Chinoiserie (Chinese influence) and the revival of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman elements. Prominent artists such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, composers like Claude Debussy, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Maurice Ravel, and other creators embraced these exotic influences, integrating them into their works. Even local or natural elements have been incorporated into this trend, demonstrating its broad appeal.
